This week, September 27th to October 4th, is Banned Books Week. Celebrate your freedom to read! According to RR Bowker in 2004 there were 175,000 NEW books published in the US in 2004. Add that to all the stuff that’s already out there- that’s a ton of books! No doubt some of them are awful, but you should still have the right to check it out and make up your own mind. Did you know that the Harry Potter books, Cormier’s CHOCOLATE WAR and Steinbeck’s OF MICE AND MEN have all been challenged at some libraries in the past 10 years? Make sure you keep that freedom to read, try something different and form your own opinion!
