March 8, 2010 by Reader's Connection

Central Library´s Mary Kay Greenawalt has sent in a list of Urban Fantasy titles with strong female characters that really get her going.

Magic Bites

Ilona Andrews writes the Kate Daniels series. The first book in the series is Magic Bites.

Bitten

Kelley Armstrong writes the Women of the Otherworld series.
Two of my favorite female protagonists are:

1) Elena Michaels, who is the only female werewolf (women don’t weather the change very well) . . .
Bitten Elena’s life takes a very serious turn when she is bitten by her fiancé the night before their wedding and finds out that he is a werewolf.

Dime Store Magic

. . . and 2) Paige Winterbourne, a witch who, at a very young age, finds herself in charge of her mother’s coven – much to the chagrin of some of the older members.

Dime Store Magic At 23, Paige becomes the head of the American Coven of Witches while taking care of her ward who has very strong powers of her own.

Moon Called

Patricia Briggs is the author of the Mercy Thompson series.
Moon Called  Mercy Thompson, a mechanic is also a skinwalker raised by werewolves (the closest thing her mother could think of to raise a coyote baby. She deals with werewolves, vampires, elves, witches and other strange beings while trying to make a living.

Cry Wolf

Briggs’ Alpha and Omega series takes place in Mercy’s world and deals with Anna and Charles.

Cry Wolf  A follow up to the short story “Alpha and Omega” which appeared in the anthology On the Prowl.

On the Prowl

Skinwalker

Faith Hunter writes the Jane Yellowrock series.
Skinwalker Jane Yellowrock is a skinwalker, a woman of native American extraction who can change shape at will. She hunts vampires for a living and is learning more and more about herself by the day.

Slave to Sensation

Nalini Singh is the author of the Psy/Changeling series.

Slave to Sensation The reader meets Sascha Duncan, a empathy whose life is changed by her meeting with the changelings – people who can change into animal form. This meeting will change her world forever.

Tempting Danger

Eileen Wilks is the author of the World of the Lupi series.

Tempting Danger Lily Yu is a detective with a very special talent – magic can’t effect her but she can detect it. She meets Rule Turner, the heir to the local lupi (read werewolf) clan and the rest is history.
