Memory Skills

Memory Skills

Now that you have practiced observing and listening it’s time to master remembering all the things you have seen and heard. Noticing details doesn’t help much in an investigation if you can’t remember the details later! Let’s see how you do with these simple memory games:

Here are two more memory games that are just a bit harder:

  • Exploratorium: Common Cents This is a hard one! You will be asked to remember something that seems pretty easy – what a penny looks like. You’ll have to dig the details up from your memory bank though. Only one of the pennies is correct. Which one is it? Usually, people remember only enough about an object to recognize it, most people don’t store small details in their memory…if you did well on this test, you have an uncommonly good memory! A great skill for an Ace Detective! It took me about 10 tries to pick the correct penny. I wasn’t very good at that one!

  • Battle of the Badges In this one, look at three different id badges. You will have 30 seconds to memorize all the details you can about each badge. Then you will be shown a series of badges and you will need to decide if each badge is real or a fake.  It really is hard to keep track of several different details like: job title, name & badge color…all at once.

Observation Skills

Observation Skills

Good detectives notice and remember details. You need to be able to concentrate on details with your eyes and store what you see in your memory. Practice can help you get better at this. First, see if you can use your eyes to find hidden harrietthespy_regpictures in the I Spy Game. Then, take it a notch tougher. Take the Harriet the Spy Spy test. Watch this  carefully and then answer the questions that follow. I tried it – it’s tricky!

Next, try these exercises in observation. Spot the differences between two photos and watch a video to see what kind of witness you would make: how many differences you can spot.ciacompare_reg

Listening Skills

Listening Skills

Listening skills are crucial when interviewing both witnesses and suspects. A detective needs to remember exactly what a person said. It also might be important to listen at the crime scene. Is there a lot of traffic at the crime scene? Can you hear barking dogs? Making note of the sounds at a crime scene might help you understand what a witness heard during the crime.

First, try these simple concentration games. The first one is like the classic concentration game. Instead of sounddetectives_regtrying to uncover two PICTURES that match, try to uncover two SOUNDS that match. Don’t be fooled by looking at the pictures. Only listen to the sounds. In the second game, play dominoes by matching SOUNDS, not counting the dots. Finally, take a listenting test with the Time Warp Trio. They need to be Sound Detectives to return stray sounds to their right time period.

Surveillance Tools

Surveillance Tools

Crafty DetectivesCrafty Detectives has all kinds of directions for making detective tools. In it you can learn to to make a hidden camera, a trick wallet, an undercover book, alarms and a lot more.
The marble telescope and the periscope are both devices to help you conduct secret surveillance. With a periscope you can see around corners or over walls or fences. With the marble telescope you can see through a keyhole. Really.

Give them a try:

If you want to be a detective you need to gather your tools together and learn some useful detecting techniques. Collecting the right tools is important so that you are ready whenever a mystery comes along or you feel the need to do some investigating. The first thing you need is something to easily carry all of your stuff in. A backpack is perfect for this. Your hands are free and you can run at a moments notice. Check around your house and see if you can collect some of these important tools:
