If You're Reading This, It's Too Late

Cass and Max-Ernest are back and their new adventure is just as dangerous as it was before. (See The Name of This Book is Secret) Cass discovers a note in her lunch bag – a shopping list from her mom. But there’s something weird about the note: a) Cass’s mom just went to the store the day before b) some of the things on the list they never eat c) the note is signed, “Mother”. It just doesn’t add up and there is a good reason it doesn’t – the note isn’t from Cass’s mom at all, it’s a coded message from the Terces Society, the secret organization Cass and Max-Ernest have joined to keep the world safe from The Midnight Sun and evil Dr. L and Ms. Mauvais.

The note sets up a meeting place so how can Max-Ernest and Cass resist? Well, there is the small problem that Cass is grounded – but when has that ever stopped a person from saving the world? Author: Pseudonymous Bosch

Yes a medieval guy in present day San Francisco. Nicholas and his wife indeed have in their position an ancient book that holds the key to their survival into the present day.

On a quiet day Flamel’s evil rival another medieval alchemist and evil sorcerer named John Dee, attacks the bookstore and kidnaps Flamel’s wife. Theodosia and the Staff of Osiris

Theodosia and the Staff of Osiris

Theodosia and the Staff of Osiris

We first met Theodosia Throckmorton in Theodosia and the Serpents of Chaos. She still spends her time in the museum where her parents work, skillfully using her curse removing kit on suspicious artifacts. Her parents are still obsessed with their work and therefore clueless to the dangers lurking in their museum. To keep Theo out of trouble and out of their way, they give her an assignment, cleaning and cataloging the artifacts in the basement of the museum… hundreds upon hundreds of forgotten, dusty artifacts. Forgotten, dusty, and chock full of dormant curses just waiting to be released.

As if all those old curses aren’t enough to deal with, mummies from all over London begin mysteriously appearing in her Dad’s museum. Theodosia puts aside her cleaning job to help her father, who is suspected in the thefts. When mummies continue to show up in her Dad’s museum night after night, he is carted off to jail.  It is up to Theo and her old friend Sticky Will to find out who is behind the mysterious behavior of the mummies who are, in fact, making their way to her Dad’s museum in the dead of night…on their own! Who has the power to re-animate long dead mummies? And why would they want to? Author: R.L. LaFevers

Skulduggery Pleasant

Skulduggery Pleasant

Skulduggery PleasantStephanie leads a very ordinary life until the death of her novel-writing uncle Gordon. In his will, Uncle Gordon leaves Stephanie his mansion and everything in it. She also inherits Uncle Gordon’s mysterious friend, Skulduggery Pleasant, who just happens to be a wise-cracking, classic car driving detective, an impeccable dresser…and a skeleton with magical abilities! Playing with Fire

When a crazed stranger tries to break into Stephanie’s house, it’s Skulduggery who comes to her rescue and reveals a world within her world…a world with magic and vampires and and a slew of creepy villains bent on taking over the world. This is about as perfect a Halloween adventure as you can get – action packed creature combat, a little magic and very funny. Stephanie doesn’t have to worry, Skulduggery’s watching her back…even if he doesn’t have one! The sequel just came out. It’s called Playing with Fire and it’s just as good! Author: Derek Landy

Emmy and the Incredible Shrinking Rat

Emmy and the Incredible Shrinking Rat

Emmy and the Incredible Shrinking Rat

Emmy is trying so hard to be good. Her parents are busy jet-setting all over the world in search of money and status while Emmy is left home alone with her cold and distant nanny Miss Barmy. Still, Emmy tries to be good. No one at school seems to like or care about Emmy either – not one person in the classroom seems to notice she exists at all. And yet Emmy STILL tries to be good. “She did her homework without being told. She ate all her vegetables, even the slimy ones. And she never talked back to her nanny, Miss Barmy, although it was almost impossible to keep quiet, some days. She really was a little too good. Which is why she liked to sit by the Rat. The Rat was not good at all . . .” The rat is Emmy’s classroom pet. He isn’t cute or cuddly, in fact, he’s a nasty little beast! Emmy can sometimes relate to the rat, because some days, she’d like to be a nasty little beast too!

One day, when the rat bites Emmy, she finds that she can actually hear what he is saying. As if the rat’s poor behavior isn’t bad enough, now she has to listen to his crabby complaining, pouting, bragging, and whining. His rotten attitude is hardly worth having this startling new power! Then the rat bites Joe, the class cool guy, who can now hear him speak too..and then he bites Joe again and shrinks him to the size of an action figure! What’s a good friend like Emmy to do but offer to get bitten a second time and shrink too? Now a few inches high, Joe and Emmy free the rat and begin an adventure to find out the source of the rat’s power and how to reverse it. Along the way, they get help from some new four legged friends and get on the trail of Emmy’s own Miss Barmy, who isn’t just cold and distant, she’s evil too!

The rat is definately the star in this one. His biting comments and sarcastic one-liners kept me laughing through the whole book. Emmy reminds me of Molly Moon from Molly Moon’s Incredible Book of Hypnotism. Both girls feel isolated, alone and unloved, yet they don’t give up on their search for friendship and happiness.
