The Tapestry #4: The Maelstrom

The Tapestry #4: The Maelstrom

Max McDaniels is a student of mystical and magical combat at the Rowan Academy. The Academy sits within the Demon Kingdom. Laws have been issued to govern the life of the people living in Rowan. In this fourth adventure, the fortress Gravenmuir, where the demons hold court and oversee Rowan’s obedience, has been magically destroyed by the mysterious and powerful sorcerer Elias Bram.

But all is still not well.  If Rowan is to keep its new found independence it will have to find a way to take on the Demons. The Academy’s director, Ms. Richter, Max and his warrior friends in The Red Branch, the mysterious Elias Bram and his grandson David, the ogre Bob, a ragtag refugee army and a very puzzling little girl…all of them will have to cooperate. It will take all of them working together to take on the powerful Astaroth.

A mighty battle is brewing and Max isn’t at all sure who to trust.

  • The Demons are fighting amongst themselves vying for power…who is the most dangerous enemy?
  • Elias and David hold powers Max can’t begin to understand.
  • Max’s best friend Cooper is missing in action.
  • Legendary assassins have been sent to kill Max – assassins who are magically bound to relentlessly hunt their target.
  • Max has been put in charge of a ragtag group of refugees who are to be Rowan’s first line of defense against an advancing Demon army.
  • And to make matters even worse…his former girlfriend is not happy with him. Not happy. At. All. Annnnnd she has a good reason not to be. That reason keeps popping into Max’s head. Who can even guess how that might turn out!

Another fast moving adventure with a complex network of people who need to trust each other when trusting is a very difficult thing to do. Loyalty vs Concern for Self, Trust vs Betrayal, Strength vs Weakness…it’s all in there. Looking forward to #5 The Red Winter, Available Fall 2013. Author: Henry H. Neff

Captain Underpants and the Terrifying Return of Tippy Tinkletrousers

Captain Underpants and the Terrifying Return of Tippy Tinkletrousers

George and Harold can turn their Principal, Mr. Krupp, into Captain Underpants. Since this is book #9 in the series, you probably already know that. You probably even know how they do it and how they turn him back into Principal Krupp. But did you know about George and Harold BEFORE Captain Underpants?  George and Harold actually met in Kindergarten.

In Kindergarten their teachers are mean, the bullies are mean and their principal is mean. When George rescues Harold from a run-in with sixth-grade bullies the two team up to take on all the mean. They may be in Kindergarten. They me be short. They may only weigh 50 pounds, but they know one thing that will help them beat the bullies. “It’s important to be smart.” (page 92)

That it is. No wonder George and Harold are the best comic book making, principal hypnotizing, bully fighting pranksters in Jerome Horwitz Elementary School. Cafeteria food? No problem. Sixth-grade bullies? No problem. These two are smart enough to handle it all…except maybe Tippy Tinkletrousers. He’s terrifying and he time travels and he totally messes everything up, as in, he maybe destroyed the earth! Are George and Harold smart enough to fix THIS mess…or will they have to time travel themselves and call on our favorite polka dot caped crusader? Maybe you’ll find out in this one and maybe you won’t. Just like always, Dav likes a cliffhanger. Pilkey says book #10 is the “final epic novel” in the series. In that one we’ll find out what finally happens. I hope! It comes out January 15, 2013. Dav Pilkey

The False Prince

The False Prince

When the King and his family are poisoned, Conner, a smart nobleman with a lot of money, devises a scheme to train an impersonator to show up at the castle claiming to be the king’s long lost son. Once this false prince is crowned king Conner himself will then run the kingdom…the false king will be just a puppet under Conner’s control.

In order for his scheme to work Conner needs to find the right boy. He scours orphanages in the kingdom and settles on three recruits, Sage, Roden, and Tobias. He takes the boys to his manor house and begins their training: swordfighting, reading, horseback riding, manners at the table…all the things a prince growing up in a castle would know.

For orphan boys it’s a chance of a lifetime. They are beggars, pickpockets and thieves. At the manor house they eat better than they have ever eaten in their lives. They play with swords! They ride horses!

Conner does his best to set up challenges and contests to pit the boys against each other. Which one has what it takes to carry out Conner’s daring plan? And what about the others? What about the boys who aren’t chosen?  They die. The stakes are as high as stakes can get. It’s a competition like The Hunger Games…the winner is the only survivor. Book one in a trilogy – looking forward to book 2!

Last of the Gullivers

After orphaned twelve-year-old Michael Pine, who seems headed for trouble, meets old Lem Gulliver, he finds new purpose as protector of the Lilliputians who live in Lem’s back garden, even if that means saving them from one another. Author: Carter Crocker

“Michael Pine is always in trouble – he’s headed right for the Young Offenders Institution if he messes up again. Then one night he hears strange singing and discovers the Lilliputians, tiny people (the size of your thumb!) with tiny animals, living in a garden surrounded by a tall stone wall.  At first, Michael can’t believe it, but pretty soon he is visiting them every day and helping out in their village.  When weasels and other humans attack the Lilliputians, Michael must turn his life around if he is going to save them.”

If you like Michael’s adventure with little people, try the original story, Gulliver’s Travels, which will tell you how Gulliver came across the Lilliputians in the first place.
