Deep and Dark and Dangerous

Deep and Dark and Dangerous

Deep and Dark and Dangerous

As a little girl, Ali’s mom spent her summers at a Main beach house with her parents and her sister Dulcie. Whenever the beach house is mentioned, Ali’s mom begins to act strange, and Ali’s mom has never wanted to go back to the beach house, even though it sits there, still owned by the family.

One day, Ali finds an old picture of her mom and her aunt taken when the two were little girls. Oddly, a third little girl has been torn from the picture.  Who is that girl? And why won’t Ali’s mom talk about her?

Ali’s mom is not happy when Aunt Dulcie invites Ali to the beach house for the summer. Ali is hoping to relax, far away from her mom’s over-protective hovering. One day at the beach, Ali and her cousin Emma meet a little girl named Sissy.  At first Sissy is nice, and seems like a good playmate for Emma, but she soon reveals herself to be an angry, mean little girl who delights in scaring Emma with a story about Theresa, a girl who drowned at the beach about the time Ali’s mom was a kid. A girl whose body was never found. Are you creeped out yet? You will be! Author: Mary Downing Hahn

Judy Moody Goes to College

Judy Moody’s having some trouble in math.  So much trouble that her teacher has suggested that she get a tutor and work on extra math outside of school. As if doing EXTRA math isn’t bad enough, Judy is sure that tutoring means baby flash cards and counting beads and jelly beans. What Judy doesn’t know is that she’s actually going to College. Her new tutor is a college student named Chloe.

Chloe is like no teacher Judy has every had.  She’s groovy! She’s fashionable! She knows how to make math fun!  Judy loves Chloe right away, when she can understand her…Judy learns math, and some college lingo too:

  • the bomb = the best
  • crucial = excellent!
  • for your 411 = information
  • peace out = good=bye
  • peeps = friends
  • so money = excellent
  • uber = way cool
  • wicked good = better than good

With Chloe’s help, Judy changes her bad mad-itude into a math-itude.

Meet Ally. Ally lives in the middle of picturesque, but isolated Utah. Her family lives at least an hour’s drive from any town. They spend their time tending the campground and star watching. Ally loves her life that follows the patterns of campers and constellations as each pass through. But Ally’s parents have dropped a bombshell – this is the family’s last summer at the campground. They leave in just one week so that they can arrive in time to see a once in a lifetime solar eclipse.

Ally and Bree meet at the campground, one freaking out at the thought of leaving, the other freaking out at the thought of staying. The two forge an unlikely but necessary friendship. Bree needs to learn the chores at the campground. Ally needs to learn how to survive middle school.

100 Cupboards

On one of their many trips abroad, Henry’s parents fail to return and Henry is sent to live with his Uncle Frank, Aunt Dotty and three cousins on their Kansas farm. At Uncle Frank’s, Henry discovers something new – people that care about him. He discovers good home cooking, riding in the back of a pickup trick and playing in the barn loft. He begins thinking that he just might get the chance to learn how to throw a baseball.

One night when Henry can’t sleep, he hears a thumping sound in the wall. A mouse? A squirrel? He decides to ignore the sound and go back to sleep. The next morning he wakes up with dust and bits of plaster in his hair. When he opens his eyes, he discovers two knobs poking through the wall, and one of them is slowly turning!

Henry picks at the plaster around the knobs and discovers a hidden door. He picks at some more plaster, and then more and more…until he uncovers 99 small doors of various sizes and shapes behind his bedroom wall. Through one door, he can smell the ocean and feel the ocean breeze. Through another he can peek inside a post office. One door that is completely dark, he is too afraid to open. The doors seem to lead to other places, 99 other places.
