George Washington Julian's 200th Birthday Celebration

Individuals of all ages are invited to a presentation by S. Chandler Lighty, Director of the Indiana Historical Bureau, who will speak about the life of George Washington Julian, who was born on May 5, 1817. Julian was a prominent Hoosier politician, lawyer and writer known as a leading abolitionist and early supporter of women's suffrage. Julian's Italianate home on S. Audubon still stands and nearby IPS School 57 is named in his honor. The presentation will be followed by refreshments and a display from the Bureau's collection.

Individuals of all ages are invited for a salute to legendary race car driver A.J. Foyt and the 40th anniversary his fourth Indy 500 win. View historic Indy 500 highlight films, some not shown in years. See the great cars and drivers who raced against A.J. Foyt. Each film, typically 25-30 minutes in length, is a time capsule of the month of May at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Films to be shown are "The Golden Festival of Speed," highlighting the 1961 Indy 500 and A.J. Foyt's first Indy 500 win; "Strategy for Speed," highlighting Foyt's second win in 1964; and "The Fifty-First 500," celebrating Foyt's third win.

At 11 a.m., there will be a performance by Jump 'n Hop, a kid-centered program featuring fun educational songs. Beginning at 12:30 p.m., Adam Riviere will share his knowledge of Native American and World Music with flutes, drums and creative storytelling. There will be face painting from 12 noon - 1 p.m., along with carnival games and other special activities for children. All are invited to sign up for the Library's "Read It and Eat" Summer Reading Program.
