Media Workshop Experience (1 hour)

The Media Workshop is a new media studio for high school students interested in music composition and recording, visual art, and/or video editing. The Media Workshop is limited to individuals and small groups of 8 or fewer. Please note, the Media Workshop hours and contact information.

Are you just not sure what to read next? We’re ready to help! We will help you select books to check out, take home, and read. Teachers, ask how you can help students get their library cards.

Research Assist – Catalog (30 minutes or 1 hour)

Students are introduced to online catalog search methods. The Learning Curve librarians assist students with accessing hardcopy sources, creating bibliographies, and digitally publishing student work! Choose between a 30 minute basic or 1 hour project-based experience.

Research Assist – Database (30 minutes or 1 hour)

Students are introduced to database search methods. The Learning Curve librarians assist students with accessing electronic sources, creating bibliographies, and digitally publishing student work! Choose between a 30 minute basic or 1 hour project-based experience.

Building Tour (30 minutes)

First built in 1917 Central Library is the center piece of the Indianapolis Public Library System. The building tour orients students to the library’s basic functions, services and resources.

Common Core Standards: Sci & Tech Subjects RST.6-8.7, RST.9-10.7, RST.11-12.7

Semester Research Package (1 hour)

Over several visits students discover topics, perform in-depth research, document findings, and prepare reports the Learning Curve’s new media tools and presentation software. The Learning Curve’s presentation software includes Microsoft PowerPoint 2010, Adobe Photoshop Elements, Windows Movie Maker, Mixcraft, and more!

iMap (30 minutes or 1 hour)

Students learn to navigate, investigate topics, and create maps in Google Earth. Teachers tell us your topic so your students can learn to map it! Choose between a 30 minute basic or 1 hour project-based experience.

Portrait of the artist as a… (1 hour)

Students use webcams and image editing software to capture and modify their own image, exploring personal expressions of identity or other inspirations such as nature, music, poetry, history or literature. This is a 1 hour activity.

Lego Robots – Introduction (30 minutes)

This hands-on acitivity uses Lego NXT robots to introduce the basics of computer programming. Students will create, observe, analyze, and improve logic based programming sequences to demonstrate their understanding of causal relationships.

Lego Robots – Intermediate (1 hour)

This hands-on acitivity uses Lego NXT robots and Mindstorms software to introduce the basics of computer programming. Students will create, observe, analyze, and improve logic based programming sequences to demonstrate their understanding of causal relationships. This is a 1 hour activity.

Lego Robots – Advanced (1 hour)

Students build on their knowledge gained from the Lego Robots – Intermediate activity. In this experiential learning activity students use Lego NXT robots, Mindstorms software, and computer programming concepts to control a robot’s logic based sequences. This is a 1 hour activity.

‘Stache it! with Photoshop (1 hour)

This small group activity introduces students to the Media Workshop, Photoshop, and Wacom drawing tablets. Students learn Photoshop basics by adding additional features, like a mustache, to existing images. Groups are limited to a maximum of 8 students.

The Learning Curve’s 7th – 12th grade activities combine traditional resources and new media tools to increase students’ fluency, comprehension, and presentation skills.
