Scavenger Hunt (30 minutes)

Students interpret clue-based text, maps and images to explore the Learning Curve’s world-class resources. The Learning Curve’s featured sections include the Think Tanks, Braille Wall and Green Screen Theatre.

Story time 2.0 (30 minutes)

Taking story time to the next level! Students practice active listening skills during an age appropriate read aloud then podcast their predictions or favorite part. We recommend pairing this activity with What Should I Read Next?

Intro to Catalog (30 minutes or 1 hour)

Students are introduced to online catalog search methods. The Learning Curve librarians assist students with accessing hardcopy sources, creating bibliographies, and digitally publishing student work! Choose between a 30 minute basic or 1 hour project-based experience.

Intro to Database (30 minutes or 1 hour)

Students are introduced to database search methods. The Learning Curve librarians assist students with accessing electronic sources, creating bibliographies, and digitally publishing student work! Choose between a 30 minute basic or 1 hour project-based experience.

Library Tour (30 minutes)

First built in 1917 Central Library is the center piece of the Indianapolis Public Library System. The building tour orients students to the library’s basic functions, services and resources.

Historic Hoosier Podcast (30 minutes)

A laptop activity using recording software, microphones, and the Indiana Historical Society’s digital collection. Students use Indiana Historical Society’s digital collection to research and script their podcast reports about historic hoosiers. Students’ podcast reports are added to the Learning Curve’s growing podcast collection.

iMap (30 minutes or 1 hour)

Students learn to navigate, investigate topics, and create maps in Google Earth. Teachers tell us your topic so your students can learn to map it! Choose between a 30 minute basic or 1 hour project-based experience.

Intro to Animation (30 minutes)

Students use Pivot animation software to create an action sequence in one of Indiana’s notable or historical events. This activity introduces an animation software as a reporting tool using a free download.

Common Core Standards: English RI.3.1, RI.4.1, RI.5.1, RI.6.1

Portrait of the Artist (1 hour)

Students use webcams and image editing software to capture and modify their own image, exploring personal expressions of identity or other inspirations such as nature, music, poetry, history or literature. This is a 1 hour activity.

Lego Robots – Introduction (30 minutes)

This hands-on acitivity uses Lego NXT robots to introduce the basics of computer programming. Students will create, observe, analyze, and improve logic based programming sequences to demonstrate their understanding of causal relationships.

Indiana Academic Standards: Math MA.3.6.1, MA.4.7.1, MA.5.7.1, MA.6.7.1

Lego Robots – Intermediate (1 hour)

This hands-on acitivity uses Lego NXT robots and Mindstorms software to introduce the basics of computer programming. Students will create, observe, analyze, and improve logic based programming sequences to demonstrate their understanding of causal relationships. This is a 1 hour activity.

Lego Robots – WeDo (1 hour)

Students use Lego We-Do kits and software to build and program a Lego machine. The Learning Curve offers Lego education activities to provide students with the procedural skills and conceptual challenges they need to succeed at higher levels. This is a 1 hour activity.

Lego eVehicle (1 hour)

Using Lego kits, students create a motor-driven car that uses gears and is crank-powered. Students observe, discuss, and manipulate the simple machines and concepts that create an electric vehicle. This is a 1 hour activity.

Animation Stations (30 minutes)

A collaborative stop motion animation activity using computers, webcams, and a variety of objects. Students think about narrative sequence and express ideas through a series of images taken with the webcam.

The Learning Curve’s 3rd -6th grade activities combine traditional resources and new media tools to increase students’ fluency, comprehension, and presentation skills.
