The author was born in Virginia but moved to Indianapolis while in grade school and grew up in her grandparent’s home surrounded by books, music and poetry. She began reading at age three and according to one account she read many books from the Indianapolis Public Library in her youth. She became a published poet and teacher of poetry and she was recognized with the National Book Award for poetry in 2002. |
