Meet the Artists at Central Library


Beginning Tuesday, February 3, one of the city’s most renowned art traditions celebrates its 21st year when the “Meet the Artists” exhibit and related events are presented at Central Library, 40 E. St. Clair Street. A collection of 16 prominent artists will display their works throughout the Library.This year’s artists include: Heath Holland (mixed media), Kevin D. Green (mixed media), Eric Shelton (mixed media), Audrey McFarland (mixed media), Tanya Jones (acrylic & steel sculpture), Nicole D. Powell (digital art), Michael Evens (acrylic), Juniues Chapttam (oil), Diane Elliott (mixed media), D. DelReverda Jennings (mixed media sculpture), Christi Curry (clay sculpture), Brett M. Allen (mixed media sculpture), Ivery Wilson-Teague (mixed media sculpture), and Onye Ndika (table top display).

Also on display will be works by Dayton, Ohio artist Derrick Davis (pastels) and Lithonia, Georgia artist Vincent Christie (photography).

Sponsored by IMCPL’s African-American History Committee, the “Meet the Artists” exhibit will be available for viewing during regular Central Library hours through March 28.

The public is invited to meet the artists whose works will be on display and enjoy an evening of cultural entertainment and refreshments during the “Meet the Artists Gala” on Saturday, February 7 from 6 - 10:30 p.m. at Central Library.

The evening will feature performances by Urban Vibes, an urbanized Western drumming troupe; the Iibada Dance Company; jazz vocalist Brenda Williams; and poet Tasha Jones. An African-American Fashion Show, coordinated by designer Raymond Gray, will be presented under the theme, “Old School Meets New School Fashion.”

Local authors will be available to sign copies of their latest works. These include Tasha Jones (Silent Killer), Nicole Kearney (Open the D.O.O.R.: Five Steps to Define Our Own Reality), Greg Stallworth (Double Deceived: A Novella Regarding the Issue of Infidelity), Brian Anderson-Payne (The Music of the Message), and  Theresa McMiller (Sensual Sovereigns).

Also as part of “Meet the Artists,” aspiring artists are invited to unleash their full potential during the “Artist Workshop: Presentation and Design” on Sunday, February 8 from 2 - 4 p.m. at Central Library in the Riley Meeting Room. Presenters will be Billy and Claudia Taylor, owners of The Art Store. This workshop is free to the public.

Light refreshments will be offered while available. Food also may be purchased from the café. Parking will be available in the garage for a fee of $5 per car.

    It’s great that you have an African-American artists’ exhibit annually. May I suggest also that you have an exhibition display in 2009 or 2010 of local Indiana artists. There are several Indiana artist clubs who have excellent professional artists who would really appreciate the exposure of Hoosier talent such as Watercolor Society, Indiana Artist Club, Hoosier Salon, Indiana Plein Air Artists, etc. The new Indianapolis Library would be a beautiful facility for an exhibition.
