Library Partnership with EmployIndy Enhanced by New Job Assistance Website

Individuals who are unemployed or underemployed can now receive 24/7 access to local re-employment services through the new Virtual WorkOne, managed by EmployIndy, that supplements many of the services offered at WorkOne Job Centers at five Indianapolis Public Library branches as well as Central Library.
Central Library Exhibit and Community Forum Explore Homelessness in Indianapolis

An examination of these and other questions can be seen during a special exhibit entitled "What Does Homelessness Look Like?" beginning Tuesday, December 6 and continuing through Tuesday, December 20 at Central Library, 40 E. St. Clair Street.

Indianapolis Library Continues Status as an American Star Library

In the most recent evaluation of the nation's largest library systems, The Indianapolis Public Library again has been ranked among the top urban libraries with expenditures of at least $30 million annually. It's the third consecutive year that The Indianapolis Public Library has received a 4-star designation as an "American Star Library" according to the recent Library Journal Index of Public Library Service.
Irvington Oral Histories Added to Indy Library's Digital Collection

The story of Indianapolis' historic Irvington neighborhood as told by its residents from as long as 40 years ago is on display through the expanding digital library of The Indianapolis Public Library. The Library has launched a collection of 74 digitized materials that include recorded interviews of Irvington residents conducted in the 1970's and 1980's, their written transcripts and other miscellaneous items that reflect on life in Irvington throughout the 1900's. The interviews were part of an oral history project sponsored by the Indiana State Library. The Indianapolis Public Library partnered with the IUPUI University Library and the Irvington Historical Society to digitize the materials. Funding was provided by The Library Fund of the Central Indiana Community Foundation.
Original Carnegie Library Celebrates 100th Anniversary!

The entire community is invited to celebrate the 100th anniversary of one of Indianapolis' original Carnegie libraries during the special centennial event for the East Washington Branch of The Indianapolis Public Library on Saturday, November 12 from 1 - 4 p.m. at the East Washington Branch, 2822 E. Central Library Employee Serves as National Cancer Advocate

The need to protect funding for cancer research and prevention programs is the message being spread nationally by a 37-year veteran of The Indianapolis Public Library who is now a 10-year cancer survivor. Penny Pace-Cannon, an adult reference librarian at Central Library downtown, is a key player in the Celebrate With Action campaign of the American Cancer Society's Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN). She recently visited with Indiana's legislative delegation in Washington, D.C. to encourage them to commit to fund proven cancer control programs and research to help develop better early detection tools and treatments for cancer.

Garfield Park Branch Library Grand Re-Opening Scheduled for November 3

Following a four-month renovation that will lead to modernized services and improved energy efficiency, the Garfield Park Branch of The Indianapolis Public Library will celebrate its grand re-opening on Thursday, November 3 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. and a full day of special activities for all ages at the branch located on the south side of Indianapolis at 2502 Shelby Street.

Indy Author Fair Features Workshops and Activities for Book Lovers and Writers of All Ages

How does one become an author? How does one get published? What is it like to write a book? These questions and others can be answered at the Indy Author Fair, a full day of free, public activities including the opportunity to meet and greet dozens of Indiana authors on Saturday, October 29, 2011 at Central Library, 40 E. St. Clair Street. The day will include programs, one-on-one conversations, and book sales and signings with local, regional and national authors, all with Indiana ties.
Shelby Branch Library Has a New Name... Garfield Park Branch!

When the major renovation to the Shelby Branch of The Indianapolis Public Library is completed in early November, the branch will be known as the Garfield Park Branch, reflecting the desire of neighborhood residents to refer to the branch by their beloved and well-known Garfield Park which sits adjacent to the branch on the near Southside of Indianapolis.

Indianapolis Public Library Announces Finalists for Chief Executive Officer Position

The Indianapolis Public Library has announced the two finalists for its chief executive officer position. Jackie Nytes, former associate director of the Library and current member of the Indianapolis City-County Council, and Tom Sloan, associate executive director of Reaching Across Illinois Library System, have made it through several rounds of the interview process and have emerged as the top two candidates.

2011 Summer Reading Program Continues at IMCPL Libraries

It's not too late for children of all ages and families to register for the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library's 2011 Summer Reading Program, "A Science Odyssey," which continues through August 1 at all Indianapolis library locations. This epic journey of science discovery and reading achievement gives participants the opportunity to enhance their reading skills and earn points for all reading activity. Points can then be exchanged for a variety of great prizes from such local organizations as the Indianapolis Indians, Indiana Fever, Royal Pin Leisure Centers, Chili's Grill and Bar, The Children's Museum Guild Haunted House, White Castle, the Indiana State Museum Center for Science and Culture, and IMAX/Indiana State Museum.

New IMCPL Job Centers Target Workforce Development

Beginning in June, The Indianapolis Public Library will provide greater assistance to chronically unemployed or underemployed individuals through one-on-one personal support at Central Library downtown and five IMCPL branch locations. The Library is partnering with EmployIndy, the non-profit workforce investment board for Marion County, as well as WorkOne, a local specialist in career counseling and programming, to create neighborhood-level job centers that provide technological training, specialized resources and educational opportunities for those seeking to enhance their employment skills.

Indianapolis Public Library Begins Search for New Chief Executive Officer

The Indianapolis Public Library has announced that it has begun its search for a new chief executive officer. The search, conducted by Bradbury and Associates, is expected to result in a new CEO by November. Laura Bramble, the CEO since 2007, announced her intention to retire last November.

Southport Branch Wins Nationwide Earth Day Recycling Challenge!

The Southport Branch of The Indianapolis Public Library, located at 2630 E. Stop 11 Road, recycled nearly six-and-a-half tons of paper in March 2011 as part of the 2011 Earth Day Challenge sponsored by the company, Paper Retriever, which provides outdoor recycling bins at the library.

Recycle to support your local Library branch!

The Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library earned over $2,700 in 2010 from its paper recycling efforts at 16 IMCPL locations. Over 364 tons of paper were recycled through library recycling bins supplied by the Abitibi Paper Retriever program. Recycling revenues are dedicated to the gift funds at individual IMCPL branches, thus helping ease IMCPL’s operating budget while being good for the environment. This month Paper Retriever is launching a new paper drive during which the Library will double its monthly earnings if it meets or exceeds the amount of paper collected during March 2010.
IMCPL Collection Enhanced by Grant from The Indianapolis Foundation

Approximately 6,600 titles supporting a wide range of patron interests will be added to the collection of the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library as a result of a $100,000 grant from the Library Fund, a fund of The Indianapolis Foundation. The new titles will assist patrons in preparing for such educational tests as the SAT, GED, math ACT, and PSAT, as well as those relating to nursing. Practical nonfiction books will feature topics in sustainable living, healthy eating, the efficient use of architectural space, and do-it-yourself projects. Such materials have been in great demand as consumers look for ways to live smarter in today's economy.

IMCPL Cited for Excellence in Financial Reporting

For the 20th consecutive year, IMCPL has received the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) for its comprehensive annual financial report (CAFR).

IMCPL Establishes New Limits on Checked Out Materials

In a move to make more materials available for all library patrons, the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library has adopted a limit of 50 items that can be checked out at any time on an individual library card. The previous limit was 75 items.
