IMCPL Announces New Procedure on Open Holds to Enhance Patron Security

Library News & Announcements RSS Feed August 4, 2008

Beginning August 18, Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library patrons will find materials waiting for them on open holds shelves organized differently.

Instead of using a patron's entire name, items will be listed under the first three letters of a patron's last name and the last four digits of a patron's card number. An example would be "Paige Turner, 21978012345678 = TUR 5678".

Located in easily accessible areas of IMCPL's 22 branch locations and Central Library, open holds shelving allows for efficient patron self-service and frees library staff to perform other duties. Library materials, except for feature film DVD's, are placed on open holds shelving after a patron makes an online request for items to be delivered to their home branch.

The change in organizing materials will provide a greater measure of privacy for patrons. Confidentiality is a core value among all public libraries.

Patrons should contact their local branch if an item on an open holds shelf is no longer wanted. A $1 fine will be assessed for items not picked up by the due date.
