Baby Bunny Bookbags InitiativeThe Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library has announced a new service that will assist parents in their efforts to read to their babies and toddlers.

The Baby Bunny Book Bag program, made possible through the combined support of the Comcast Foundation and the Library Fund, a fund of The Indianapolis Foundation, a CICF affiliate, will provide materials appropriate for infants, such as tactile books and board books, that parents or caregivers can use to introduce books to their young ones.

Modeled after the Library's original Bunny Book Bag program for preschoolers that began in 2006, the Baby Bunny Book Bags are canvas tote bags that contain 12 books, including a variety of board books and a copy of My Shining Star: Raising a Child Who Is Ready to Learn by Rosemary Wells.

Research indicates that children should be exposed to as many as 1,000 books at an early age and that they gain crucial language skills by listening to stories. The Baby Bunny Book Bag initiative is intended to make access to children's books convenient and worry-free. It offers parents the chance to obtain children's books during the crucial formative stage in a child's life.

The Baby Bunny Book Bags can be checked out at IMCPL branch locations with a regular IMCPL Card or a special fine-free Bunny Bag Library Card. Parents or caregivers can fill out an application for a Bunny Card at their local IMCPL branch.

A total of approximately 500 bags will be available at IMCPL branches and loaned to home daycare facilities from IMCPL's grant-funded "Little Bitty Bookmobile" outreach service.
