IMCPL's 135th Birthday Celebration: Giving Back to the Community

From its beginning in 1873 as a subscription library to its current role as a center for modern information resources, the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library has played an essential role in the lives of local residents in support of their lifelong learning interests.
Today, in addition to a collection of over two million items, IMCPL's programs and services help promote early literacy, improve computer skills, and provide patrons with the information tools that are important in the 21st century.
In celebration of its 135th anniversary of service, IMCPL invites the public to participate in an effort to give back to the community in the form of a special food drive benefiting Gleaners Food Bank.
From April 9 - May 9, all Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library locations will have barrels into which individuals are encouraged to donate non-perishable food items. In sharing a common interest with Gleaners to improve the quality of life in Marion County, IMCPL and its patrons will assist Gleaners in providing food to charities that feed the hungry. Now in its 27th year, the food bank has distributed more than 210 million pounds of food and critical grocery products to 400 Hunger Relief Charities that serve the people in need of emergency food assistance.
In addition to supporting Gleaners Food Bank, individuals are invited to visit their local IMCPL branch for a variety of free programs for all ages. Children's storytimes, craft programs, book discussions and musical performances will highlight the month's calendar of events.
