ABOUT THE LIBRARYInterim Central Library to Close on Saturday, September 8In preparation for moving materials and staff into the transformed Central Library, the Interim Central Library, 202 N. Alabama Street, will close its doors to the public at 5 p.m. on Saturday, September 8, 2007. The Interim Central Library has provided downtown library services since December 2002, three months after construction began to expand Central Library at 40 E. St. Clair Street. It will take approximately six weeks to move the Interim Central Library’s estimated 700,000 volumes of materials into the new facility. Following that, staff orientation and training along with final building preparation will be necessary before Central Library opens to the public. Patrons should be aware that circulating materials at the Interim Central Library will be unavailable during the collection move. Thereafter, circulating materials will be available by request for delivery to and pick up at any other Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library location. Reference materials will not be available until Central Library opens. A drop box for returning materials will be located outside the main entrance of the Interim Central Library until October 31. Materials can also be returned to any IMCPL location. IMCPL leased the building housing the Interim Central Library from the City of Indianapolis. The building served as City Hall from 1910 to 1962. Prior to the Library’s habitation, the building served as the site for the Indiana State Museum. The Interim Central Library houses nearly 90 percent of the materials that were on the shelves at the former Central Library. Remaining materials, mainly older bound periodicals, government documents and some juvenile items, have been stored off-site until the new library opens. For information on other IMCPL branch locations, as well as updates on progress toward opening the transformed Central Library, visit www.imcpl.org. Central Library will celebrate its grand reopening by the end of 2007. |
