Children Invited to Color Their Way to a Special Opening Day at the New Central Library!

Library News & Announcements RSS Feed June 18, 2007

One lucky child will be chosen to help "unlock the doors" when the transformed Central Library opens in late 2007 from participation in the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library’s "Central Library Grand Opening Coloring Contest."

Children ages 6 - 12 are invited to visit any IMCPL branch or bookmobile to pick up an entry form and contest coloring sheet featuring Booker, the Library’s mascot. Coloring sheets also can be accessed on the 2007 Summer Reading Program page of the Library’s website.

One winner will be randomly chosen from all entries to join Booker and city officials during a special community ceremony to mark the opening of the new Central Library.

Completed sheets, which can be decorated with crayons, colored pencils, markers or paints, must be returned to any IMCPL branch or bookmobile by Saturday, August 11.

Having a child participate in the official opening is of symbolic importance, linking the event with the 1917 opening of the original Central Library. Iron gates at the Library’s entrance were purchased through the generosity of Indianapolis school children as a memorial to the beloved Hoosier poet, James Whitcomb Riley. The gates will be permanently fixed in an open position when Central Library opens.

In addition to receiving a special Ceremonial Key to Central Library, the coloring contest winner will be honored as the first official "Curver" of the Learning Curve at Central Library, an 18-thousand-square-foot "information playground" where children and teens will be able to explore a universe of interests with continuous activities in distinctive environments. The honor will include the prize of a new laptop computer.

When visiting the Library, children and parents are encouraged to register for the 2007 Summer Reading Program, "iREAD," which helps children develop a love for reading and maintain the reading habit during the summer.
