ABOUT THE LIBRARY
Library's "Go Center" Emphasizes Business Resources
What's that big orange, white, and black sign hanging from the 3rd floor railing at Interim Central?
It's a sign promoting the "Go Center," the theme of a new marketing campaign created by the Economic Development Committee of the Indiana Library Federation. The goal is to highlight business reference in public libraries.
Long before the technical revolution, the creation of the Internet, and a research-savvy population, public libraries were where one went to find answers to complex academic questions. Today, libraries still play an active role in the education of children, but what you may not know is that the Library also may be your best business partner.
Staff at the Interim Central Library can assist with many issues -- especially those questions that relate to starting or expanding a business, finding a job or enhancing a career. Library patrons throughout Indiana will start to see "Go Center" signs at many public libraries. The Go Centers are the result of the expanding need for accurate, reliable information by entrepreneurs, communities and businesses.
"It's a well-known adage that to get where you're going you need a plan or a map," says Linda Kolb, executive director of the Indiana Library Federation (ILF). The ILF, of which both librarians and libraries are members, is the organization behind the Go Centers. "Getting information is no longer the challenge it used to be. But, knowing how to filter and sift through it, and being able to identify reliable resources is a whole new process. Your public librarian can both accelerate and simplify your search for relevant facts and figures. Your library's Go Center is a convenient resource for both business and career planning," Kolb added.
Go Centers were an outgrowth of ideas librarian members of ILF had on ways Indiana's libraries could be more involved helping entrepreneurs and spurring growth and economic prosperity in their communities -- no matter what the size of the library or its collection.
