IMCPL Reduces Fees for Replacement Library Cards

In an effort to improve service to patrons, the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library has reduced the fees to replace IMCPL library cards.
If a library card is reported lost or stolen, a patron will need to re-register for a card, show proper identification verifying name and address and pay $1 for a replacement card. The previous charge had been $5.
IMCPL, Colts and State to Collect Books for Foster Youth and Young Adults -- Initial Goal is 50,000 Books

The Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library, the Indiana Department of Child Services and the Indianapolis Colts are asking you for your help in educating our foster youth and young adults by collecting 50,000 books in the next year. On any given day in Marion County alone, more than 1,200 children are in the foster care system, and too often they leave their belongings behind. IMCPL and its partners want to change that by helping place 25 age appropriate books into the hands of each foster youth and young adult; and are asking for your support to make a smart handoff to Indiana's youth.
IMCPL Cited for Excellence in Financial Reporting

For the 16th consecutive year, the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library has received the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) for its comprehensive annual financial report (CAFR).

Developing childhood literacy skills, providing lifelong learning opportunities, and maintaining a sizeable collection of in-demand materials are part of the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library's commitment to meet the 21st century information needs of patrons. These and other future service priorities have been defined as a means for the Library to remain a relevant and essential part of patrons' lives while it works to streamline operations and hold the line on spending of tax dollars. As IMCPL enacts various austerity measures as part of a reduced 2007 operating budget of $36.3 million, or 1.5% less than 2006, local branch libraries will be involved in a number of activities that ensure a continued high level of services.

A total of 58,007 children and families participated in the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library's 2006 Summer Reading Program, "Lost in a Book". The total represented a 1% increase over 2005 participation.

Downloadable Audio Books Enhance IMCPL's Collection

Library patrons can now listen to the latest bestsellers on their personal computers or other supported listening devices through a new digital service provided by the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library. In response to increased demand for audio books, over 550 popular audio books are available to download from the Library's website. These range from the popular novels of Dean Koontz and Nora Roberts to the classic works of Mark Twain and Charles Dickens. A wide variety of non-fiction are also included in this collection.
IMCPL Announces Projected Opening for Transformed Central Library

Due to significant recent construction progress, the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library Board of Trustees has announced that the projected opening to the public of the transformed Central Library downtown has been moved up by approximately six months, and is now scheduled for the end of 2007.

As an institution that embraces a philosophy of serving all citizens, the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library offers services, programs and materials to enrich the lives of those from all cultural backgrounds. Reflecting the various language needs of Marion County residents, the Library's collection has materials in 21 languages, including bilingual and instruction books for learning English. Emphasis is being placed on addressing the lifelong learning needs of the local Hispanic community, the fastest growing group in central Indiana, and familiarizing them with the Library's educational resources.
IMCPL Foundation Receives $550,700 Grant To Fund the Marion County Internet Library

Library users in Marion County can access a wide assortment of full-text online databases as a result of a $550,700 grant to the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library Foundation from the Library Fund of The Indianapolis Foundation, a Central Indiana Community Foundation affiliate.
IMCPL Increases Circulation of Print Materials

Through the first five months of 2006, circulation of print materials at the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library increased nearly 10 percent over the same period in 2005. More than 3.3 million print items, including adult and juvenile fiction and non-fiction, foreign language and large print materials, music scores and magazines, were checked out by Library patrons from January through May 2006, compared to just over 3 million items in 2005.
Library Moves to Recoup Construction Delay Damages from Former Central Library Construction Managers

The Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library (IMCPL) has added the former construction managers of the Central Library addition and renovation project to the companies it is suing to recover repair, legal, and delay costs associated with the project. Named in the suit were Turner Construction Company, Trotter Construction Company, Inc., and Shiel Sexton Company, Inc. The firms managed construction of the Transformed Central Library at 40 East St. Clair Street as the Library Delivery Team, a tri-venture (Turner Construction, 50 percent; Trotter Construction, 30 percent; Shiel Sexton, 20 percent) they formed for the project. The Library Team?s contract ended in December 2005, and was not renewed.

Indy Reads "Alphabet Affair" to Celebrate the Letter "H"

An evening of entertainment and celebration is in store during the 8th annual Alphabet Affair benefiting the Indy Reads adult literacy service of the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library on Saturday, April 29 beginning at 6:15 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency, One South Capitol Avenue. The event will honor all things "H". Although it is black-tie optional, guests are encouraged to come in their most creative "H"-related costumes and compete for prizes in several categories. The evening will include such "H"-themed activities as a head-spinning live auction, a hearty meal, hip dancing and a hula hoop contest.
Central Library Construction Proceeds Rapidly on Major Project Components

Notable progress has been made toward completion this year of key construction milestones in the Central Library Transformation Project downtown. Most apparent is the initial installation of glass paneling on the southwest corner of the six-story addition, which will house a majority of Central Library’s collection of materials and provide a technologically-rich environment for the lifelong learning needs of all patrons. A total of 300 glass panels will form the curtain wall of the north and south sides of the addition.
National Study Finds Americans Value, See Future Need for Public Libraries

A new national study from the American Library Association (ALA) finds that Americans overwhelmingly are very satisfied with their public libraries, agree more public library funding is needed and believe public libraries will be needed in the future. Two-thirds of adult Americans (roughly 135 million people) visited their public libraries last year.

Teen Garage Band Callout for Teen Arts and Music Festival 2006

Teen garage bands have until Saturday, April 15 to apply for participation in the Teen Arts and Music Festival 2006, to be held on Saturday, June 24 at the Wayne Branch of the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library, 198 S. Girls School Road.
Record Patron Visits and Increased Circulation Highlight 2005 Activity at IMCPL

A record 5.4 million patrons visited the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library in 2005, according to final patron usage statistics released today. The figure represents a 5.6% increase in the door count over 2004 at IMCPL’s 23 Marion County locations.
