IMCPL Revises DVD Checkout Policy

Library News & Announcements RSS Feed August 31, 2005

Effective September 1, the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library will make adult feature DVD's that have been in the Library system for 180 days available for patrons to make requests and renewals either online or in person at the Library.

The loan period for adult feature DVD's will remain at three days.

The 180-day period for requests and renewals was established after an evaluation of the procedure adopted in February 2005 designed to make current adult feature DVD's more readily available on library shelves and minimize the amount of time such items were kept out of circulation.

It was found that the shorter loan period of three days, compared to the previous 21-day loan period, increased the turnover of the DVD collection, with almost three times as many patrons having adult feature DVD's checked out than before the February announcement.

The revised procedure also resulted from the Library increasing the number of DVD's in its collection by 40% since the beginning of 2005.

Patrons visiting the Library's website to request or renew adult feature DVD's will be able to do so only for those items that have been in circulation for 180 days. Newer adult features will continue to be listed in the catalog indicating their locations for patron pick-up. Not all copies of a particular title might be requestable or renewable, since the change is based on the date an item was received by the Library.

Educational, juvenile and other non-feature DVD's, which total approximately 17,000, continue to be renewal and requestable with a 21-day loan period.

IMCPL currently has over 39,000 adult feature DVDs in its collection.
