ABOUT THE LIBRARY
Central Library to Close for Transformation Project
The Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library's $104 million renovation and transformation of Central Library enters a new phase when Central Library closes to the public at the end of business (9 p.m.) on Thursday, September 26.
Enhancements to the historic downtown library, constructed in 1917, will include a six-story, 236,000-square-foot glass-framed addition that will wrap around the current facility from the north, underground parking for 420 vehicles, a circular auditorium, and an atrium linking the new and original structures.
Following the closing of Central Library, preparations will proceed toward moving downtown library services to an interim library at 202 N. Alabama Street, the former site of the Indiana State Museum. The Interim Central Library will open in early December and will serve patrons until the anticipated completion date for the transformed Central Library in early 2006.
While the move is being made to the Interim Central Library, library patrons will not have access to the Central Library's collection. They may not pick up materials at Central during the time the library is closed nor will items from Central be able to be sent to other library locations.
Materials borrowed from Central Library prior to September 27 may be returned to any other IMCPL location.
The Groundbreaking Celebration for the Central Library project is scheduled for Friday, September 27 at 10 a.m. on the grounds of the American Legion Mall and in front of Central Library.
