ABOUT THE LIBRARY
Old City Hall to Become Temporary Downtown Library
In an agreement with the City of Indianapolis, the Old City Hall located at 202 N. Alabama Street, will become home to materials currently housed at Central Library during its expansion and renovation.
This "interim" library will open to the public in the fall of 2002, once Central Library closes for construction of its $103 million transformation.
The IMCPL Board of Trustees and the Library Foundation will lease the Old City Hall from the City of Indianapolis, which owns the building, for $1 a year for three years. IMCPL will cover the cost of utilities, maintenance and improvements to the building during the term of the lease. The building most recently was home to the Indiana State Museum.
In exchange, Indy Parks will pay IMCPL $1 to purchase the former Broad Ripple Branch Library, located in Broad Ripple Park. The 11,500-square-foot facility will be used as a new community center, allowing Indy Parks to significantly expand the number and types of programs offered to children, families and neighborhood organizations.
The Broad Ripple Branch closed in 2000 when the new Glendale Branch opened in the Glendale Shopping Mall.
