Indy Library & Sheriff's Office Expand Gun Lock Giveaway Partnership
April 02, 2014
The Indianapolis Public Library and Marion County Sheriff's Office have announced an expansion of the gun lock giveaway program.
The pilot program for this partnership began with pick-up locations at six Library branches. However, the program's popularity, including over 500 gun locks being distributed out of the Irvington Branch alone, led to expanding the number of branches at which the free gun locks are available.
Free gun locks are now available at the following branches: College Avenue (4180 N College Ave.), Decatur (5301 Kentucky Ave.), Franklin Road (5550 S. Franklin Road), Eagle (3325 Lowry Road), Garfield Park (5202 Shelby Street), Haughville (2121 W. Michigan Street), the InfoZone (in the Children's Museum - 3000 N. Meridian Street), Lawrence (7898 N. Hague Road), Nora (8625 Guilford Ave.), Pike (6525 Zionsville Road), and Wayne (198 S. Girls School Road).
This is in addition to the original six pick up sites: Central Library (40 E. St. Clair Street), Southport (2630 E. Stop 11 Road), Glendale (6101 N. Keystone Ave.), Brightwood (2435 N. Sherman Drive), Irvington (5625 E. Washington Street), and West Indianapolis (1216 S. Kappes Street).
Library CEO Jackie Nytes stated, "Judging by the numbers of people who have obtained the free gun locks, this has proven to be a very effective partnership for the Library. Individuals feel comfortable visiting the Library as a welcoming place, not only to receive this kind of service but to access resources that can ensure safe neighborhoods and enhance individuals' quality of life."
Since 2011, Sheriff John Layton has distributed over 6,000 free gun locks throughout the community through inmate commissary funds. Other pick-up locations for free gun locks include Beech Grove Firearms, Don's Guns, Pop's Guns and the Riley Children's Hospital Safety Store.
