Indy Library Cited for Excellence in Programming

November 05, 2013

Hangzhou sister city dancersThe Indianapolis Public Library has received the prestigious Programming Award from the Indiana Library Federation for providing ongoing, innovative and diverse programming designed to meet the community's needs.

The award was presented at the annual ILF recognition dinner in October.

During the past year, the Indy Library has been a partner with the city's Sister City initiative by providing free cultural activities for local citizens to connect with those in Hangzhou, China and Cologne, Germany, while participating in staff exchanges with public libraries in those cities. Other unique Library programming celebrated the cultures, languages and people of Eastern Europe, helped individuals learn more about eBook devices through the eBook Tinker Stations, provided one-on-one technical assistance at the Library's Job Centers, promoted prominent local African-American art during the Meet the Artists exhibit, and gave individuals at chance to meet local authors and learn about the writing industry as part of the Indiana Authors Fair.

"The awards committee was impressed with The Indianapolis Public Library's commitment to excellence in its approach to programming," stated Susan Akers, ILF executive director. "The Library's choices add to the quality of life in and around the Indianapolis community."

A key part of the Library's mission is to promote the social, economic, recreational and lifelong learning interests of the area's diverse population.
