Library Summer Reading Participation Achieves 8-Year High

August 27, 2012

Over 58,000 children and families participated in The Indianapolis Public Library's 2012 Summer Reading Program, "Gear Up for Good," the highest level of readership since 2004. The 93rd annual program, which included participants at all Indianapolis Public Library locations as well as the Beech Grove Public Library, attracted more toddlers and preschoolers since 2004 and more children ages 6-11 since 2009.

In teaming up with Presenting Sponsor Indiana Members Credit Union (IMCU), the Library gave children an opportunity to learn about community philanthropy while benefiting Indy Backpack Attack. Summer readers donated over 23,000 items such as pencils, rulers, crayons, sharpeners and calculators earned from their reading activity to help needy students fill up their backpacks and be ready for school.

A new component of this year's program found 1,602 children taking part in "Earn & Learn," which allowed those with outstanding fines and fees that prevent them from borrowing library materials to pay down their debts through reading. It was a unique way for young ones to become re-engaged in reading and to become regular library users.

"The multi-faceted approach to this year's program was successful in motivating more children to improve their reading skills," stated Jackie Nytes, Library CEO. "But the Library will continue to find new ways that connect families and children to our early literacy resources that can prepare them for academic success."

The Indianapolis Public Library Foundation is the proud sponsor of the Summer Reading Program. Supporting sponsors include The Kroger Co.; United Water; Indiana Pacers; Toysmith; Chase; Lilly Endowment Inc.; Citizens Energy Group; Carrier Corporation; OneAmerica Financial Partners, Inc.; Old National Bank; 92.3 WTTS; Verizon Foundation; The Indianapolis Foundation Library Fund; Comcast; and the United Way of Central Indiana and the Ruth Lilly Philanthropic Foundation.
