Indy Library Receives Diversity in Business Award

July 17, 2012

The Indianapolis Public Library has been recognized for its efforts to provide meaningful business opportunities for minority-owned, women-owned and veteran-owned businesses. The Library was one of five recipients of the Mayor's Diversity in Business Award presented on July 16 during Mayor Greg Ballard's "Celebrating Success," breakfast as part of the 2012 Indiana Black Expo Summer Celebration.

Through April of 2012, 43% of the Library's contractual services have been awarded to MBE/WBE/VBE businesses, repeating the performance of 2011. Of the $1.3 million awarded in total contracts thus far in 2012, over $580,000 involved MWVBE contracts for such services as janitorial, electrical and lawn care throughout the Library's 24 facilities. In all of 2011, over $1.8 million was awarded in contracts with MBE/WBE/VBE businesses. The Library began tracking contracts to veteran-owned businesses in September 2011.

"The Library has a long-standing commitment to exceed our City's goals relating to the integration of our diverse business community," stated Jackie Nytes, Library CEO. "Our staff and Library Board are to be commended for their leadership over the years on this important initiative in which the public library is a key player."

Businesses interested in doing business with the Library can visit the Library's website at www.imcpl.org to learn about purchasing procedures, current requests for proposals, and contact information for various Library departments.
