The Indianapolis Public Library is playing host to two representatives from the Hangzhou, China Public Library through September 21 as part of the Sister City relationship between Indianapolis and Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang Province in southeastern China.

During welcoming ceremonies on Monday, September 10 at Central Library attended by Indianapolis Public Library staff and volunteers from the Indianapolis-Hangzhou Sister City Committee, keys to the City of Indianapolis were presented by Jane Gehlhausen of the Mayor's Office of International & Cultural Affairs to Liang, Liang, Associate Professor & Vice Director of the Hangzhou Public Library, and Yu Lin, Zhou, Director of Literature Circulation Centre of the Hangzhou Public Library.

Their visit will allow for an understanding of best library practices in both countries and a comparison of problems, policies and programs. As part of their first day at the Indy Library, the Chinese representatives toured the collection management, bookmobile and information technology areas. Throughout the remainder of their two-week library visit, they’ll visit a number of Indy Library branches, meet with Library staff, and attend various cultural events in Indianapolis.

The Indianapolis-Hangzhou library staff exchange will continue when two Indy Library representatives, Ann Ricciardelli, a Public Service Librarian at Central Library, and Sailan Liang, a Public Service Librarian at the Glendale Branch, visit Hangzhou from October 21 – November 18.

A similar library staff exchange is taking place between Indianapolis and its Sister City of Cologne, Germany. Nicole James, Manager of the College Avenue Branch, recently concluded a two-week visit to Cologne. A representative from the Cologne Public Library will visit Indianapolis in 2013 as part of the 25th anniversary of the Sister City relationship between the two cities.
