March 07, 2012

An informational guide to help parents make well-informed school decisions to meet the needs of their children is available at all 23 locations of The Indianapolis Public Library. At a news conference on Wednesday, March 7 at Central Library, Library CEO Jackie Nytes joined Mayor Greg Ballard and Stand for Children Indianapolis Director Karega Rausch to kick off the distribution of the comprehensive Indianapolis School Chooser Guide.

Published by GreatSchools in partnership with Stand for Children, Indiana Public Charter Schools Association, Indiana Non-Public Education Association, School Choice Indiana and The Indiana Partnerships Center, the 140-page guide contains information about all schools in Marion County. The guide includes programming information, key deadlines, transportation, fees and academic data gathered from all 11 public school districts, public charter schools, non-public schools and the Indiana Department of Education to help parents select the right fit for their children. It will be distributed at dozens of Marion County locations so parents may conveniently pick up a copy. The guide will be updated for the 2013-2014 school year.

"The Library is extremely excited about partnering in the distribution of this great information," said Jackie Nytes, Library CEO. "One of the things the Library does is to make information available and facilitate people's access to the information that helps them make good choices."

Mayor Ballard also spoke at the kickoff event attended by parents, teachers and representatives of community organizations and groups helping to distribute the guides within Marion County.

"Our commitment to quality education - and educational options - in Marion County is unwavering, and this guide is a fantastic opportunity to help parents make informed decisions about those options," Mayor Ballard said. "It's unprecedented to have this kind of cooperation among the school districts and schools within Marion County. This guide is an important tool, and I commend everyone who helped bring it to fruition."

In addition to coordinating distribution sites, Stand for Children, a national education organization that opened its Indiana office in January 2011, has worked with community advocates to equip parents with resources to help them make well-informed school decisions to best meet the needs of their children. Parents are encouraged to attend a training session to help them use the new guide to make educational decisions. "We aim to make sure Indianapolis parents are getting more than pages of data," said Stand for Children Indianapolis Director Karega Rausch. "Parents and families will get the training they need to make informed choices for their children. That's something we can all be proud of."
