Southport Branch staff recently won the Earth Day Challenge for paper recycling at the library. Pictured are (from left to right): Ellen Edwards, Jackie Wright, Mary Earle, Susan Barhan, Diane Brunner, and Manager Cathy Gage.

The Southport Branch of The Indianapolis Public Library, located at 2630 E. Stop 11 Road, recycled nearly six-and-a-half tons of paper in March 2011 as part of the 2011 Earth Day Challenge sponsored by the company, Paper Retriever, which provides outdoor recycling bins at the library.

Such efforts earned the Southport Branch’s gift fund an “Earth Day Bonus” that will add up to $190 from Paper Retriever used to purchase colorful lamps and chairs that are needed for the library’s teen area.

"We actually recycled over 56 tons of paper in 2010, so we’re off to a great start in 2011,"” said Cathy Gage, Southport Branch Manager. “"We encourage everyone in our community to bring newspapers, magazines, catalogs, old mail, office supplies and school papers to our green and yellow bins,” she added."

The ongoing paper drive encourages individuals to be good stewards of the environment while supporting local non-profits by recycling through Paper Retriever bins.
