IMCPL Establishes New Limits on Checked Out Materials
January 06, 2011
In a move to make more materials available for all library patrons, the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library has adopted a limit of 50 items that can be checked out at any time on an individual library card. The previous limit was 75 items.
The lower limit, effective February 1, also will allow greater turnover of items, as patrons will need to return items before reaching the loan limit in order to check out additional items. One popular format, DVDs, are limited to 12 per category borrowed on a library card at any time.
Most circulating materials at the library have a 21-day loan period. Feature films on DVD have a 3-day period. The charge for overdue items is 25 cents per day, except for DVDs which carry a $1 charge per day.
"Our overall intention is to protect the public's investment in the library's resources," stated IMCPL CEO Laura Bramble. "The more realistic loan limits will serve to improve availability of materials and won't impact the borrowing habits of a vast majority of library patrons."
