Library Snapshot Day: A Day in the Life of IMCPL!

April 02, 2010

From the delivery of books and materials to providing one-on-one computer assistance and a range of other services, the faces and activities of Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library staff and patrons will be chronicled during Library Snapshot Day on Tuesday, April 13.

As one of the major events during National Library Week, April 11 - 17, Library Snapshot Day will document a typical day in the life of IMCPL, including the many varied activities that serve the public and those that occur behind the scenes that allow the library to function efficiently. There are many activities that patrons never see, such as the cataloging of books, loading delivery trucks, opening boxes and placing items on shelves, that are as vital to the library’s success as story times for children and assisting patrons with reference questions.

Library staff, who will be taking pictures throughout the day, will compile their photos and statistics of the day to tell the library story.

Captured images will underscore the important role of the library in the community. In 2009, IMCPL set all-time records in many areas of service, including circulation (17.1 million items), patron visits (5.9 million), computer session hours (1.2 million), and web visits (10.2 million). In addition, the Library had 511,974 registered borrowers in 2009 (a 9.3% increase over 2008), and IMCPL staff conducted 952,256 reference transactions (a 10% increase).

IMCPL also earned numerous professional accolades in 2009, such as a 4-star rating by the Library Journal professional trade publication, a top 10 ranking among urban libraries in the Hennen American Public Library index, and the prestigious "Library of the Future" award from the American Library Association for the innovative Learning Curve at Central Library.
