Join the Crowd! Read and Rhyme Aloud! IMCPL's 2010 November Read-Aloud Program

October 28, 2010

Beginning November 1, families, especially those with preschoolers and toddlers, are invited to enjoy time reading aloud together during the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library's 2010 November Read-Aloud Program, "Join the Crowd! Read and Rhyme Aloud!"

Early readers can be introduced to the world of books and language - the key to future learning success. Inspired by the works of Dr. Seuss, such as his classic children's book "The Cat in the Hat," this year's program seeks to strengthen reading habits of families and those in daycares by challenging participants to read aloud at least four together hours during the month.

Upon registration at any IMCPL branch or Central Library, participants will receive free program materials, including a colorful log with stickers to track reading time, a canvas tote bag, and other prizes. As little ones listen to stories and watch text and illustrations unfold across the page, they'll develop skills needed for learning how to read. Families with children of all ages will rediscover the fun of sharing stories aloud - the program is easy to complete with a set goal of reading aloud just 15 minutes a day.

A number of fun and educational activities are planned to accompany the November Read-Aloud Program. Families can enjoy the new animated series, "The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That!" airing on WFYI-TV. They can also listen to "Cat in the Hat" stories read by WFYI staff on the Library's 24-hour Call-a-Story telephone line at 275-4444. And, throughout the month, families are invited to "Meet the Cat in the Hat" (a real character!) at various IMCPL locations. They're encouraged to bring their cameras to capture the fun.

As one of IMCPL's major reading initiatives throughout the year, the November Read-Aloud Program attracted over 22-thousand participants in 2009.

The November Read-Aloud Program is co-sponsored by the IMCPL Foundation, TCU, OneAmerica, WFYI, and the Louise Lage Kirtland and Hugh C. Kirtland Endowment Fund, a fund of The Indianapolis Foundation.
