It's Library Card Sign-Up Month at IMCPL!
September 03, 2010
September is Library Card Sign-up Month, and the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library wants to make sure that all children and adults in Marion County have the smartest card of all -- a library card.
Public library programming and books for children make a difference in the lives of students. By providing school-age children with engaging programs and wide-ranging collections, students from all backgrounds can become committed and enthusiastic readers.
Activities at IMCPL during Library Card Sign-up Month include free storytime programs for children of all ages, author appearances, craft programs for adults, special programs for teens, and musical performances.
"A library card has always been the most important school supply of all," says Laura Bramble, IMCPL CEO. "Today's libraries are thriving technology hubs that millions rely upon as either their first or only choice for computer and Internet access. In doing so, libraries provide children with not only the tools to be literate, but information literate as well. There's a lot happening at the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library, and the best part for both children and parents -- in these though economic times - is that it's all free with a library card," Bramble added.
Getting a library card is easy. Cards can be obtained upon completion of an application at any IMCPL location or the Bookmobile with identification verifying name and current address. In addition to being able to check out books and materials, library cardholders can use their cards for such things as placing holds on materials and managing their accounts online, accessing reliable online databases, and using the Library's new World Language service to learn a foreign language.
Currently, there are over 534,000 Marion County residents who are library cardholders.
Observed since 1987, Library Card Sign-up Month is a time when the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country remind individuals that a library card is the passport to a world of information.
