Haughville Branch Hosts Announcement of 2010 Census Job Opportunities

February 16, 2010

Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard and Congressman André Carson visited the Haughville Branch on Tuesday, February 16 in an effort to encourage members of the community to take advantage of opportunities for employment with the 2010 Census. The Census is currently hiring individuals to serve as Census takers who work to collect data, conduct interviews and locate households in Marion County.

"It is imperative that we are able to carry out the grassroots efforts to count every person, and the success of that effort rests in the hands of the men and women who will be employed in these important jobs," said Mayor Ballard. "Unfortunately, as of the end of last month, the Census Bureau remained more than 5,000 people short of their recruitment goal for our community, so I encourage anyone interested in this opportunity to take advantage now."

These short-term jobs offer excellent pay at approximately $15 an hour and flexible hours. Individuals employed by the Census will received paid training and work within their own communities to carry out the all-important job of making sure all individuals are counted.

"As our economy continues to climb out of a deep recession, these Census jobs offer the chance for out-of-work Hoosiers to earn some much-needed income and gain valuable experience," said Congressman Carson. "These positions are also an opportunity for people to be a part of one of the most critically important outreach initiatives our community will ever participate in."

In addition to the Census recruiting efforts, the Indianapolis Private Industry Council (IPIC) will be working via the Marion County WorkOne centers to provide assistance to those interested in taking advantage of Census job opportunities.

"The WorkOne centers of Marion County are pleased to ensure access for all Marion County residents interested in becoming Census takers. We will make every effort possible to guide residents through the application process, including making computers available to fill-out a Census employment application in the public Information Resource Areas of each Marion County WorkOne center," said Brooke Huntington, president of IPIC.

Qualified Census takers must be:
