Comcast Foundation Supports 2011 Summer Reading Program

October 21, 2010

The Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library Foundation has received a grant in the amount of $30,000 from the Comcast Foundation in support of the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library's 2011 Summer Reading Program.

Throughout its 91-year history, the Library's Summer Reading Program has fostered a love of reading among children while helping them maintain strong reading habits during the summer. The free, eight-week program allows participants to earn points to exchange for prizes donated by local businesses and organizations as a reward for their reading achievement.

In 2010, nearly 55,000 participants read more than one million books, making IMCPL's Summer Reading Program one of the largest of its kind in the nation.

"Comcast is proud to be a part of such a vibrant and successful reading program that offers creative ways to keep young people's brains active during the summer months," said Maria Weber, Comcast Vice President, Public Relations and Community Affairs. "By keeping students engaged and helping to nurture a love for reading, this program can have a profound effect on student achievement."

This grant from the Comcast Foundation is in recognition of Comcast's commitment to the communities where its customers and employees live and work. Since its founding in 1999, the Comcast Foundation has distributed more than $65 million in cash support of programs implemented locally in Comcast communities. Within Indiana in 2009, Comcast contributed more than $7 million in sponsorships, grants, and in-kind donations.
